Montpelier
Home of James Madison
Montpelier Station, Virginia
MontpelierMontpelier was the lifelong home of James Madison, Father of our Constitution, a chief proponent of the federal Bill of Rights and fourth president of the United States.

President Madison was the third generation of his family to live on this extensive plantation located in the lush Piedmont of Virginia. From here James Madison made important contributions to the U.S. Constitution and Bill of Rights, and here he and Dolley retired after two presidential terms. The mansion is surrounded by 2,700 acres of rolling pasturelands, formal gardens and a national forest in Virginia’s lush Piedmont in sight of the Blue Ridge Mountains. Purchased and expanded by the du Pont family, the site is famed for thoroughbred horses and the annual Hunt Races. Here visitors experience the evolution of an important historic site and the creation of a monument to the Father of the Constitution.
